19th Century Pressed Horn Snuff Box Depicting the 1840 Funeral Procession of Napoleon Bonaparte in Paris.
Napoleon's remains arrived in Paris on 15th December 1840 on the ship La Dorade. Sailors carried the casket to the funeral carriage, which was more triumphal car than hearse. Resting on four massive gilt wheels, it consisted of a gilded base, 25 feet long and 6 feet high, with a semi-circular platform in front. The carriage, weighing 13 tons, was drawn by 16 black horses.
The image on the cover depicts the cortege passing in front of the Arc de Triomphe, down the Champs Elysées. The text reads: "Translation des cendres de Napoleon 15 10mme 1840".
In very good condition with wear to the cover detail. There is a very slight gap between the base and cover when in the closed position. Without splits. One small section of hinge cover missing, which does not affect use.
Approximate weight is 95 grams.
Approximate dimensions are 10.4 cm length, 5.5 cm width and 2 cm height.
